II. Historical note
The first catalog for Barry College (1940-41) lists eight courses for the "Speech Department" in the division of Language and Literature. At least one speech class was required of all students preparing to teach. Sister Trinita Flood was sent to Barry in 1946 specifically to be "the speech teacher." In the 50s, "Speech Arts" included several classes in dramatics; subsequently the Speech and Drama Department was born, and Barry's dramatic productions under the direction of Sister Marie Carol Hurley (1954-74) became highly popular and well attended by the community.
The Department of Communication, as such, was formally introduced in 1983 within the Department of Telecommunication, after university status had been established. Sister Vivien Jennings, a Dominican Sister from Caldwell, New Jersey, developed the original curriculum and ordered the first television studio equipment which became the David Brinkley Studio. Undergraduate and graduate degrees were offered.
III. The Collection
The collection includes a brief history of the department up to 1990, annual report for 1991, flyers for different majors in communication, and folders featuring the David Brinkley Studio.
