II. Historical note
When Barry College opened in 1940, the Department of Language and Literature included Greek, Latin, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and English. English courses included exposition, journalism, English in business, and drama. Many changes were made through the years, with graduate courses being offered in the early 50s and creative writing in the 60s. Major changes in the 70s, when Sister Dorothy Jehle was Chair, included a special program called Women's Studies, promoted largely by Dr. Lillian Schanfield, Asst. Professor at that time. Another Asst. Professor, Dr. Virginia Gellens, promoted the use of literary criticism in her courses. When the School of Arts and Sciences was established in 1976, with Dr. Andre Cote as Dean, the department name was changed to the Department of English and Modern Languages. By 1986 there were 93 undergraduate and 25 graduate courses. The name was changed again, this time to the Department of English and Foreign Languages. Sister Dorothy Jehle resigned as Chair in 1988 and Dr. Laura Armesto took her place.
When Dr. Armesto became Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences in 1991, Dr. Ina Steinberg became Chair of the department. Beginning in 1991, the Humanities Program and Women's Studies were listed in the Barry catalog under Interdisciplinary Programs.
