II. Historical note
When Barry College was founded in 1940, mathematics was part of the Natural Science Department with Sister Mary Jane Hart as head. Sister Rita Cecile Boyle was the lone instructor in mathematics. With the growth of the college, course offerings were increased, and faculty added. In 1959, Sister Paul James Villemure came to the campus and assumed chairmanship of the math department. A consortium with Biscayne College during the sixties and early seventies allowed students of Barry and Biscayne to take courses at either institution. In 1977, Mathematics came under the administration of the Department of Physical Sciences, chaired by Sister Marie Joannes O'Donnell. Sister Paul James retained the title of coordinator of the math department. In 1990, a Department of Mathematics and Computer Science was formed and Father Pedro Suarez, SJ, became chair.
