II. Historical note
In its early years, Barry College offered a "general psychology" course through the philosophy department, and educational psychology was offered by the education department. Other courses, such as child psychology, social psychology, and adolescent psychology were gradually added, and a minor in psychology was available in the late 60s. At that time, through the consortium with Biscayne College (now St. Thomas University), Barry students could obtain a psychology major. With the hiring of Dr. Richard Schaefer in 1972, Barry began to offer the psychology major on its own campus. In 1977, Dr. Stephen Koncsol joined the faculty. Orientation of the psychology department was equally divided between experimental and clinical expertise. By 1980, there were 65 psychology majors. By 2001 the department was representative of the Boulder model, that is, the scientist/practioner view of the psychologist.
University status was established in 1981, and the Master of Science in Clinical Psychology became available in the fall of 1982. In 1995, the Master of Science in School Psychology was introduced.
