II. Historical note
Barry College held its first commencement exercises on June 3, 1942, with ten students receiving bachelor degrees. The ceremony was held in Cor Jesu Chapel at eight o'clock in the evening, followed by Solemn Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Bishop Joseph Hurley of St. Augustine conferred the diplomas and addressed the graduates, who were presented by Father Cyril W. Burke, chaplain at Barry College at that time. The Baccalaureate Mass had been offered the previous Sunday morning, May 31. The traditional Rose and Candle ceremony was probably initiated with this commencement.
III. The Collection
The collection includes Commencement and baccalaureate programs from 1942 to the present, Rose and Candle programs and rosters of graduates from 1947 to 1957. It also includes copies of a few graduation and baccalaureate addresses from the early years, and some correspondence from the speakers.
