II. Historical note

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is one of the six regional accreditation organizations recognized by the United States Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. This agency accredits over 13,000 public and private educational institutions ranging from preschool to college level in the southern United States.

SACS accredits educational institutions in the states of Virginia, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama, Tennessee and Texas, as well as schools for US students in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America.

To gain or maintain accreditation an institution of higher education must comply with the standards contained in the Principles of Accreditation: Foundations for Quality Enhancement and with the policies and procedures of the Commission on Colleges (SACS-COC). The Commission on Colleges applies the requirements of its Principles to all applicant, candidate, and member institutions, regardless of type of institution: public, private for-profit, private not-for-profit. The SACS Council on Accreditation and School Improvement is responsible for the accreditation of primary, secondary, and middle schools and school systems in the SACS region.

Barry College received word of its accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools on December 3, 1947. This accreditation has been maintained throughout the years, including the years after university status was established. The title, Southern Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, was changed in the early 60s to Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
