II. Historical note

Physical education has been "a viable part of the institution since Barry opened its campus in 1940." The history as written in 1993 by Neill Miller, Associate Professor of Physical Education, traces the development of an all-women's program of sports activities with a simple major in physical education into a complex Department of Sport and Recreational Sciences in a co-ed university. This department was replaced in 1994 by the School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences, composed of two separate departments: the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics and the Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences.

The first head of the physical education department at Barry College was Jean Mary Wilkowski, who served from 1941 until June of 1943. For the next three years there were interim instructors, until the fall of 1946, when Margaret Husson (later Hartzell) became the head of the department and served until the early sixties. Neill Miller joined the faculty in 1967 and became assistant to the dean when the School of Human Performance and Leisure Sciences was formed.

The Department of Sport and Exercise Sciences (SES) offers both undergraduate and graduate degree programs for students seeking career opportunities in human performance, leisure, and sport-related areas. Undergraduate programs include Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Physical Education, Sport Management, Sport Management-Diving Industry, and Sport Management-Golf Industry. Graduate programs include Movement Science (Athletic Training, Biomechanics, Exercise Science, Sport and Exercise Psychology, and the General Option), Sport Management, and a dual degree program with the School of Business leading to both the MBA and the MS in Sport Management. Barry also offers seamless bachelor's to master's programs in Sport Management, Exercise Science, and Athletic Training enabling students to earn both bachelor's and master's degrees in five years.
