II. Historical note
The School of Natural and Health Sciences was named in 1991, replacing the division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences and the Academic Health Science Center, all of which had grown from the original biology department. From its founding in 1940, Barry College maintained a strong science department and had trained students for medical technology, biological research, and pre-medicine. Many graduates from the biology department had gone on to higher universities for advanced degrees, and with the inauaguration of Sister Jeanne O'Laughlin as president of Barry, the expansion of the health sciences program was a priority. In 1972, Sister John Karen Frei became chairman of the biology department, replacing Sister Agnes Louise Stechschulte, and when the School of Natural and Health Sciences was named in 1991, Sister John Karen became dean of the school. Numerous pre-medical programs are offered on the undergraduate level, and on the master's level there are programs in anesthesiology, health services administration, occupational therapy and biomedical research, among others (2001).
With the reorganization of the University in 2008, the College of Health Sciences was created. Included in this College are all nursing programs, cardiovascular perfusion, histotechnology, nuclear medicine technology, diagnostic medical ultrasound technology, master of science in biology, biomedical sciences, occupational therapy, anesthesiology, health administration, and public health. Dr. Bell came to Barry University in 2002 serving as Dean of the School of Nursing and as the Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies, in 2008 it was announced her appointment of as Dean of the College of Health Sciences.
III. The Collection
There are various leaflets and brochures about all the different programs in the School of Natural and Health Sciences, and there is a colorful pictorial booklet, published in 2001, presenting all the programs in the School. There are Fact Books for 2004 and 2005, and there is a folder with information about the summer science camp.
There are also minutes of various meetings: Planning days, Undergraduate Faculty, Biology Department Faculty, Staff Meeting, Curriculum Improvement Meeting, Joint Faculty Meeting, Curriculum Meeting, Program Directors Meeting, and Distribution Committee Meeting.
