II. Historical Note
The Lay Advisory Board for Barry College was organized in 1962 when Sister Mary Alice Collins was the executive vice-president of Barry. An organizational meeting was held on September 26, 1962 with Michael ONeil as temporary chairman, Frank Mackle as vice chairman, and Donna McCullough as secretary. Other members attending the organizational meeting were: James Garner, John McGeary, Jr., Edwin Wiegand, and Joseph Walker. Formal installation of Board members was held on Founders Day, Nov. 20, 1962. According to the By-Laws, the purpose of the Board was to aid and assist the College through advice and counsel, on matters pertaining to the administration and operation of the college, the exercise by the College of its corporate powers and authority, and the attainment of the aims and purposes of the College. The name of the Lay Advisory Board was changed to Barry College Lay Advisory Council in 1971. By that time it was also agreed that the committees of the former Lay Advisory Board were abolished and re-established as committees of the Board of Trustees. Between 1971 and 1974 some members of the Council were named to the Board of Trustees. By 1976 the Advisory Council no longer existed.
The Collection
Includes minutes of the meetings, reports from the President of the College, Treasurer, academic Dean, and other college personnel. It also includes correspondence related to the planning stage and organization of the Advisory Board. Committee reports reveal interest on numerous college concerns, such as: student insurance proposal, using the college facilities as a polling station, setting up a Business Administration program, etc.
