II. Historical note

The first Vice President for Academic Affairs at Barry College was Sr. Trinita Flood, named to this position in 1972. Before that time the Academic Dean (1940-1970) and the Dean of Faculty (1970-1972) were responsible for all academic matters. When Sr. Trinita became President in 1974, Dr. M. Daniel Henry was named VPAA, and in 1979 Sr. Marilyn Morman became acting VPAA. In 1981, when Sr. Jeanne O'Laughlin was inaugurated as President of Barry College, Dr. J. Patrick Lee became the VPAA, and held the position until his death in 2006.

Special events and visits of prominent guests sometimes became the occasions for university assemblies honoring friends and benefactors. Honorary degrees were frequently awarded. The Vice President for Academic Affairs chaired these meetings. At the convocation in February, 1985, it was celebrated the dedication of the School of Business and honorary degrees were conferred on Henry Kissinger and Victor Posner; at the convocation in May, 1986, T. Boone Pickens received an honorary degree; in November, 1986, Robert H. McCabe was likewise honored; and in February, 1987, Mrs. William Wilson received an honorary degree. Two convocations were held in 1995: Cardinal Jaime Ortega received an honorary degree in May, and Father Timothy Radcliffe in October.
