II. Historical Note

 The Barry College/University escutcheon was designed by Sister Helene O'Connor at the request of Mother Gerald Barry in 1939. It combines the coat of arms of Bishop Patrick Barry, Bishop of St. Augustine at that time, and the seal of the Dominican Order. The three shamrocks from Bishop Barry's coat of arms were replaced by three books to symbolize the college. In correspondence with Sister Gonzaga Greene, December 14, 1939, Mother Gerald wrote, "The college colors could be red and silver as are the Barry crest of the family."

Throughout the years, the Barry seal has been used on all the institution's official stationery and various documents and programs. A Graphics Guideline Manual was issued, September 1, 1989, in an attempt to achieve consistency in Barry publications.

III. The Collection

The file includes an undated letter from Sister Helene O'Connor to Sister Dorothy Browne explaining in heraldic terms why she designed the escutcheon as she did. Articles from Angelicus and from the Barry News Bulletin describing the escutcheon. Graphics Guideline Manual compiled in 1987.
